OPERATIONAL OVERVIEW
GAM OUR SUGAR BUSINESS

GAM is the third largest private producer of sugar in Mexico, with a combined daily milling capacity of approximately 36,000 tons of sugarcane.

Our sugar business maintains a strategic position in the market due to the following factors:

  • GAM fully owns and operates three mills strategically located in México (in the states of Sinaloa, Jalisco and Michoácan). These mills sell their products in México as well as in the United States. Together with our strategic partner based in Colombia, INCAUCA, we also own a 49% stake in the Benito Juarez Mill located in the state of Tabasco.
  • GAM is a pioneer in the vertical integration of its supply chain, from the production of sugar cane to the diversification of revenues from the co-generation of energy based on bagasse (cane waste), which fuels the mills themselves, is used in the beverages division, and is also sold to third parties.
  • Due to timely investments to sustain the deployment of process improvements, GAM, has positioned its mills as highly competitive, low-cost producers, contributing to business profitability. Sugar sales volume grew by 12% in 2014, totaling 403 thousand metric tons, with 4.2 million metric tons of sugar cane milled by year end.

2014 SUGAR CAMPAIGNS

During 2014, GAM rejoined the efforts of Somos Métele Caña, a company concerned with the informed use and consumption of sugar in Mexico. In addition to communication campaigns designed to showcase the beneficial natural properties of sugar, the company sponsored the participation of six athletes in the Central American Games held at the Mexican state of Veracruz. GAM’s sponsorship efforts focused not only on the athletes’ competitive preparation but also on their overall health and welfare.

The results obtained by our sponsored team in The Central American Games were highly satisfactory; a total of 16 medals were brought home by this team. One of the top medalists was Nuria Diosdado, who became known as the “Queen of the Games”, winning a record of 7 gold medals.

Sugar is a very important element for the high performance of these athletes as it provides excellent natural energy that is rapidly absorbed by the body.

GAM’s support to athletes remains active, and will continue during various sporting events leading up to the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro.

STEVIA
Stevia Holdings

In order to enrich its value proposition, our sugar business developed Stevia Holdings, a subsidiary through which we produce and sell Stevia and various formulations based on this sweetener. Stevia is a non-caloric sweetener of natural origin, free of both chemicals and artificial elements. With its proprietary and natural process, Stevia Holdings has managed to get rid of the bitter-like flavor that characterized Stevia-based sweeteners for several years.

Among the benefits of Stevia is that it is 100 percent natural, replacing synthetic sweeteners such as sucralose and aspartame, among others. It is also suitable for diabetics, and it is 200-300 times sweeter than sugar.

Since 2014, our Stevia-based sweeteners are no longer considered as just a raw material for GAM’s customers; rather they have become holistic solutions offering value-added elements through formulations and joint production efforts with industrial manufacturers in the food sector. Following two consecutive years of extensive research, GAM has been chosen as the exclusive supplier of Stevia for major industrial clients in the food and beverages industry in Mexico and South America, reflecting the quality of our company’s technology.
